VHS Pile

My day has just been made by an unexpected discovery in my apartment's community laundry room. Three bulging garbage bags of VHS movies! I'm assuming they were free...if not I just stole someone's movies. Included in my new collection are classics such as Mad Max, American Beauty, and Super Troopers. Too too much! I left most of the others remaining in the bags, which still sit in the laundry room for the next lucky passerby, but I may go back and dig for more.

Happiness

Something I didn't mention in my last post was that I picked up a job a couple of days ago. I'm working as a lab assistant for student computing. Andrew came with me when I went and was able to get a job, too. We were both rather surprised and perturbed at how easy it was to get hired. However, it is an amazing position. I sit in the lab perusing facebook and talking to my coworkers, who seem to be really cool people. No one has needed to ask me for help yet (mainly because there is no one in the lab at this hour in the summertime). So basically I now have time to brainstorm a new website for my photography. Good deal.

Another interesting new development in my life is my fitness regime. Lately I've been getting up early to go jogging. I never dreamed I'd be able to possess this sort of self discipline. I actually felt a little disappointed today when I didn't get to exercise in the morning. It's a great feeling to know you're doing something that will actually make an impact on your body. It's not like doing 200 crunches and then sprawling on the bed with a bowl of ice cream. I've worked to the point where my abs complain every time I laugh, sit up, or walk. The best thing is that it didn't even feel like I was working that hard.

So basically life is amazing right now. I've got a steady job, a loyal best friend, sore abs, a trip to Scotland to look forward to, and a boyfriend who never fails to make me smile.

Girlish Fancies

I just got back from a Mary Kay party. Yes. A Mary Kay party. It was a disturbing glance at what I may be like when I'm middle aged if I choose to lead a relatively normal life. I hope it does not come to that. The theme tonight was "How to look ten years younger". Needless to say my friends and I got looks of deepest loathing from the other women as we entered.

Mary Kay has a strange effect on women. They speak of this makeup brand in tones suspiciously similar to that of religious fervor, and Mary Kay herself is likened to Christ. Entering one of these gatherings is like diving into a pool of estrogen, infused with a desperation to salvage what good looks life has left you. The mood is determinedly optimistic, but the scent of defeat is still traceable. I'll have to think more about this before I continue writing. May be a topic for Capstone.

In other news, I've gotten a ring tone that doesn't suck. Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Dani California". Hear it and think of me.

Well I should definitely write more but staring at the computer too long is making my eyes raw. I'll come back and continue later.

Art Overload

I just got back from a meeting with the Marketing staff and it looks like I'll be a freelance photographer for St. Ed's this summer while I'm in Scotland. They're giving me a stipend and everything. The only problem I foresee is trying to get people to sign the model release form. I need one for every person I photograph, which is going to be a pain.

So I'm out of finals, and already bored. I keep feeling like there is some project due, or something I need to study. I've taken up painting again. There has been this large canvas just sitting in my room for ages, and I never had time to do anything with it. I finally came up with an idea and started working on it last night. I've realized that if I over-think what I want to paint, and try to be too precise with my work, I get burned out really quick. Now I've just decided to tackle it and not bother being perfect; it looks better anyway. I'd really like to use oils on it. I've tried working with them before and they are the hardest media by far I've experienced. If you know how to use them, let me know!
